A Perfect Summer Night

31 Jul

Last night was an awesome night.  I headed home after work to meet my dad at the tennis court complex by the lake.  It was an absolutely beautiful night – no clouds in the sky, a perfect 75 degrees.

My dad is the whole reason I started playing tennis as a young toddler to begin with.  Growing up, I knew it was always summer break when dad would have Wimbledon on every t.v. throughout the household so if I was doing chores, I could watch the match as I moved around.  It’s one of those sports I will always be grateful I got into at a very young age.  Tennis, like snowboarding to me, is a life-long sport that I will be able to play until I am old and gray living in Hilton Head Island.

We got to the courts with about 30 minutes to spare before the next round of play began.  If you’re not familiar with how to “reserve” public tennis courts, let me give you a crash course.

Play begins every hour on the hour.

If you want to reserve a court, place your racquet on the court-specific peg board.  If your reserving it for an ‘odd hour’, ie: 7:00 p.m., place it on the left.  Even hour, ie: 8:00 p.m., the right.

If for some reason the people you are waiting for on court 4 get off at 6:40 p.m., don’t you dare remove your racquet and go to that court.  Wait until 7:00 p.m., so you secure the full hour of play.

I hope that was helpful 😉

Dad and I got to play a whole hour between 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. which was the perfect time before the sun went down.

After tennis, we headed over to the local pub Wilde to grab a couple beers and grilled salmon sandwiches on their patio.

It was a perfect summer night.

Well folks, I’m off to Lolla Land starting tomorrow aka Lollapalooza! Being the type of person I am, I have already mapped out the bands I want to swing by and already packed my backpack.

Bailey is interested to know what’s in my Lolla backpack, so I’ll share with the class:

Lolla

  1. Cash money – I opted out of the ‘Cashless’ wrist band option because that feels dangerous to me.  I’m on a money diet, so I want to know how much I’m spending!
  2. ID, credit card, medical insurance card – My mother taught me to never go anywhere without it
  3. Sunscreen & chapstick – FYI you’re not allowed to bring spray-on sunscreen into the venue
  4. A poncho – This is just for Friday… 40% chance of rain, so who knows what will happen
  5. Portable phone charger – CLUTCH
  6. Refillable water bottle – I have like 10 of these, so if it doesn’t make it home with me I won’t cry about it
  7. Ziploc bag – If it rains, I’ll put my phone/charger in it
  8. Sunglasses – Obvi.
  9. Granola Bar – pretty sure this isn’t allowed, but I need snacks!
  10. Mini deodorant – no body likes to stand next to stinky people.

… and obviously my 3 day pass will be on my wrist.

See you next week!

Hilton Head Recap: Activities

31 Mar

Good morning, friends!

I’m back in Chicago from my week long vacation at Hilton Head Island.  It was an absolutely amazing trip and I can’t wait to share my recaps with you – Activities & Food.

There are different types of vacationers… those who like to take tours and have their days planned out for them hour-by-hour, those who just like to relax and see where the day takes them and those who are a mixture of both.  I tend to be the kind that takes the day as it comes, but one thing I do like to plan out are my weekly workouts/activities.  For me, vacation is not an excuse to skip the exercise, it is a chance to embrace it – especially when you are going somewhere with great weather!  Here was the breakdown of my week:

Sunday: Walking on the beach

Monday: 2 Mile run & strength

Tuesday: Vaca 5k (yes, this was an actual thing)

Wednesday: Yoga in the a.m. – Tennis with Dad in the p.m.

Thursday: 3.5 mile run

Friday: Tennis with Dad & Biking

As I mentioned in my last post, my family stayed at the Marriott Surf Watch resort on the island.  I am totally biased towards Marriott resorts/hotels.  The customer service is amazing, the amenities are great, the beds are to die for and they always have a ton of great activities scheduled for the week.

Each day, the staff at Surf Watch had a list of fitness related activities you could participate in as well as social activities.  The two fitness activities I participated in were the Vaca 5k with my dad and the Yoga with my mom.

Both were great and the staff that lead the events were so friendly and enthusiastic.  My mom was a big fan of all of the water aerobics and water strength classes – she took a class every morning – way to go, mom 😉

Some of the more social activities we went to were Brats, Brews and Bonfires – Craft Beer tastings and grilled brats and the daily happy hours at the Sea Salts Bar by the beach – obviously.

Besides the events Marriott had available to us, the island is full of all sorts of great activities.  There are tennis courts on every corner, lots and lots of bike and running paths, golf courses galore, paddle boarding and so much more.  Any of these activities are a great way to get in some daily exercise 🙂

For me, it is really essential that I plan these in advance so that I am more motivated to do them.  Also, if you are on vacation with family or friends, it is great to get them involved as well.  Workout buddies are the best!  Ta Ta for now!

25th Birthday & The 11 Mile Run

8 Jul

Good Morning!

We just had quite the eventful holiday weekend as I’m sure many of you did as well.

Friday

… Was my 25th birthday!!!! I ended up having to go into the office to run payroll that day, but there were not too many employees around so I was able to get a lot done.  Around noon, my family came and took me out for a birthday lunch!  I gave them a quick tour of the office before we headed out as got them to sample some delicious brownies my co worker had brought in for me.

Have you seen the ones on pinterest that have pretzel bites and salted caramel on them? Yah- so good!

After work, I met Brian out at the new Brewery in Lakeview called DryHop.  We have been anxiously waiting to try the place, but it has been SO busy ever  since it opened a month ago.

1

We weren’t in a huge hurry to eat right away so we posted up at the bar and grabbed a few Brews.  I tried “The Jury” which was an American Pale Ale while Brian had the “As The Crow Flies” which was a vanilla porter… I liked his better 😉

3

After 40 minutes or so, we snagged a table and sat down for dinner.  We ordered the mussels as an appetizer which were deliciously cooked in a white wine/butter mixture with shallots and garlic.  As my main course, I ordered the Lamb Pastrami sandwich which was to die for! Seriously so good, it had gruyere cheese, arugula, pickled onions and some sort of aioli on it.

4

The sandwich was extremely filling, so I saved half of it for a 2;00 am snack later 😉

After dinner, Brian and I headed home to change for the night out!  I ended up choosing the bar ‘Untitled’ as my bar of choice for it’s delicious cocktails and fun atmosphere.

A lot of my friends were able to come out and help celebrate and dance the night away!

Saturday

The next morning was a little rough so we took our time sleeping in and making breakfast before heading back out to the suburbs to hang out with me family.

I had to refuel and hydrate real good because my dad and I were slotted to play tennis around Noon.  It was a beautiful day on Saturday and not extremely hot so I definitely wanted to spend the majority of my time outdoors.

My dad and I played about an hour of tennis while Brian and Bailey played around the park.

6

I have been playing tennis with my dad since I could basically hold a racquet, it has always been one of my favorite activities to do together.

7

After tennis, we headed straight back to my parents and immediately jumped in the POOL! Best. Feeling. Ever.

The rest of the evening was spent just relaxing and catching up with my family.  My dad even through together a delicious snack while hanging at the pool that consisted of roasted peppers, goat cheese and pesto.

8

SO GOOD.

A giant delicious thin crust pizza followed the appetizer which had mushrooms, green peppers and giardiniera on it.  Pizza totally hit the spot – it’s been a long time since I’ve had pizza that wasn’t originally frozen from Trader Joe’s.

Sunday

I made sure to hydrated plenty throughout Saturday because Sunday Runday was on the calendar for 11 miles!

My friend Lindsay and I (yes, we have the same name) woke up bright and early to beat the heat and start the day off right!  It was an absolutely beautiful day for a run – I was so excited to get out despite the fact that my muscles were a little tight from the tennis match.

About 4 miles in I was feeling good, but all of sudden had to go to the bathroom – like real bad!  We had to make a pit stop and I decided that eating pizza the night before a long run was probably not the brightest idea I’ve ever had – but it tasted so good!

After the bathroom break, I felt great and we completed the 11 miles in under 2 hrs. at an average pace of about 10 min/mile.

We finished are run conveniently close to a Starbucks so I grabbed some iced coffee with soy milk and a multi grain bagel with cream cheese.  This hit the spot!

9

The rest of the evening was spent relaxing…

At home stretching…

10

By the lake…

11

And at the dining room table 🙂

13

After dinner, Brian and I took Bailey on a quick walk and also stopped by Sports Authority so I could stock up on some running fuel!

Candy for the win!
